Climate & Geography

Central Delaware has a humid subtropical climate that is moderated by the Atlantic Ocean and the Delaware Bay. Compared to the northern parts of the state, winters are milder and receive less snow. Summers are warm and often humid, but temperatures rarely go above 80 degrees. Rain is frequent in spring, resulting in more than average rain. Residents can expect 203 days of sun.

Recreation, Culture & Entertainment

Water sports are Magnolia’s main source of outdoor recreation. Residents fish, boat, and hunt at numerous spots on the nearby St. Jones River. In addition, Magnolia is only 15 minutes west of the Delaware Bay, which has expansive areas for boating, fishing, crabbing, and swimming. The Little Creek Wildlife Area on the bay is a popular destination, with a pier for crabbing and relaxing wildlife walks. After an afternoon of fishing along the bay, residents can dine at the many fresh seafood eateries and shop at art galleries and local boutiques. Other popular amenities in Magnolia include several local, family-owned eateries as well as Jonathan's Landing Golf Course.

Nearby Dover, a 15-minute drive north, is where Magnolia residents do most of their shopping and dining. Historic Downtown Dover District has boutiques, restaurants, museums, and craft breweries. In addition, First State Heritage Park hosts community events and open air markets. Dover Mall, a large shopping complex, has more brand names and designer boutiques.

Cost of Living & Taxes

Magnolia’s cost of living is higher than the national average because of high health care and housing costs. These are followed closely by high grocery and utility costs. Transportation costs are below average.

Delaware is tax friendly to retirees because it does not tax Social Security. In addition, all other forms of retirement income are largely deductible from the state income tax. Property taxes are low, and there is no sales tax in the state.

Health Care

According to Gallup’s Well-Being Index, Delaware ranks in the top eight states. As it is a small town 55+ community residents in Magnolia will need to travel a bit outside of town for hospital care. The nearest hospital that is rated high performing by U.S. News is Bayhealth Kent General Hospital in Dover. Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, about 30 miles away, is also high performing.
